Some ideas for a game

Posted by Fooliolo - January 27th, 2012

It's been a while since I actually decided about committing to making a game in flash.

I've asked around for ideas of what kind of game people would like to see. Not to put fault on them, but most suggestions have been overly generic; things like "dungeon crawler", "Tetris", "top down shooter", and "Checkers". The more ambitious suggestions included "Dominion emulator" and "Crossfire hybrid". Well, Crossfire and Dominion already exist in the physical world, and it's much more fun in a social setting than in front of a computer anyways, so I won't be doing those, to say the least.

Fastforward to this week, and I took a look at the game Subtle Energy 2. Pretty neat game, and I really like the color trails the particles leave behind. This spurred me to think about the older games that I've played that I have enjoyed, even though the graphics couldn't even remotely compete with today's material.

Overall, my goals for this project is to get some insight into programming a real-time piece, get my brothers to shut up about making a game, and to have fun. I would also like to spend quality time with it, unlike my first attempt at making a game (which consisted of a 3 week summer crash course in Project FUN), but I also don't want to deal with a project that is so large and complicated that I couldn't possibly finish it.

So far, here's what I'm thinking:
-- The protagonist will be a phoenix. Seriously, I've never heard of a game where the main character was a phoenix. Someone out there is probably going to prove me wrong....
-- The game will involve a large degree of freedom. Phoenix flight will be awesome if executed correctly, but this will have a large amount of hurdles to jump. The freedom aspect will also test how thorough I am.
-- There will be a world to explore at your leisure. The details aren't final, but it will have a great amount of similarity to Star Control 2, in that you can do negotiations with other creatures, get involved in minor skirmishes, and maybe collect resources. However, there probably won't be a countdown to destruction.
-- The amount of skill required to 100% the game won't be very high, although it might still be beyond 90% of the people. However, if you have a rock for a brain, the most you could probably do is the "main" storyline and a few optional goodies.

Some inspirational games:
-- The Ur-Quan Masters. Basically the free, open source, fan version of Star Control 2. Seriously, this game is awesome, but the most glaring flaw is the lack of explanation of the controls. It's incredibly unlikely that you'll win the game to any degree on the first playthrough without lots of saving, but the experience is immersive and unique.
-- The Tiamat Sacrament. Think Final Fantasy, without the overworld map, or excessive grinding (although you can still do that to make things easier). Learning the lore of the world rewards you. Teamwork is paramount to your success, in that you need special items to use your dragon breaths, and only certain others can supply these items. Or you can build up a single attack that strikes 8x times with 2x damage. New items don't equate to "hits harder", but enhances your power in different, unique ways. Though it's not a super polished game, the concepts and mechanics behind it impress me. Newgrounds trailer for this game can be viewed here.
-- Various Newground games of various categories. Yes, even ones without medals. The melting pot of creativity is why I love Newgrounds.

It sounds really awesome. Will it have medals?

Play as a phoenix? portal/view/435364 :3

I actually did recall about that game after seeing another entry by Kajenx :o

Unfortunately, that's the only game I remember. See if you can find another one!

Cool.
