Mastermind hehehe

Awesome visuals and dialogue, although at first he was acting all funny and jittery ("You have one-two-three colors in the wrong spot"), but I just updated my flash player; you should tell people about that.

It's funny considering how superior he thinks he is when in reality, Mastermind is actually a game that is 100% beatable once you know what to do. I've beaten it everytime in less than 6 turns, and I've even managed a casual best of 5 turns and 58 seconds. I guess prior knowledge of the game sorta ruined part of the thrills. Sorry =(

I thought maybe you could put at least one more mode with a twist on the game. Hard mode with a 25 second timer each turn is not a bad idea, but it leaves something more to be desired. That's my only complaint.

Keep up with the good stuff!

The-Swain responds:

Updated, thanks for the heads up. Did updating the player fix the problem?

Also, I've never lost at this game and I doubt many people will unless they're first getting into the concept...but it's not really about the winning. It's a nice little brain-teaser, nothing more.

And I actually did this more for those of us who are familiar with the classic game. I like being able to play it single player now, rather than finding someone to jockey my clue pegs for me while I play play play.

As for the depth, naturally it's just a little game so there won't be that much to it, but depending on the popularity, it would be neat to add more challenging modes in the future. Who knows, maybe a FIFTH peg?

Great Game!!

Man, the skull at the end was freakin' crazy... and freaky. Makes me wonder what the people of Earth are thinking...

I've seen the controls setup where the gun is independent of movement, but nevertheless it's put to good use in this game. Unfortunately, it's largely due to the fact that the enemy moves in somewhat random patterns. I'm not sure if this is classic arcade element coming into play or anything, but it sure pissed the hell out of me everytime I was forced to crash. Oh well.

Weaponry got a little hectic at the end, especially when the slice laser and the rapid lasers were exchanged frequently. Also, what seemed like an inconsistency is how weapons can achieve firing speed greater than that of power ups when you're trying to destroy an enemy at point-blank range. Great for pwnage, but otherwise it just doesn't seem appropriate.

Is there really a purpose to the gems? They seem to be bonus-only elements and occasionally can be found during a brief stage.

Even if there was an original game whose qualities you are trying to mimic, I felt that there could be some better work done at the "sound-like" music you can hear in the beginning. Great retro music nearing Saturn and Mars otherwise.

Overall however, it's a great and challenging game. Finished in 2280 seconds (37 minutes), and good quality time too!

pixeljamgames responds:

Thanks for the in depth review. Yes, the space gems are very useful if your bro gets killed earlier in the game. in Level 3, there is a window of opportunity towards the end where you can buy your bro's life back, and a new ship to boot. The Reanimator will swing by and if you have enough gems, your bro will be back. So, no one should give up if one of them gets killed earlier on in the game.

A game with an original concept!

I've not seen such a game like this that can vary well in difficulty with such a crazy set of rules!! Btw, your Old West challenge level (May 18) is probably one of the most difficult ones (I was the only one on there at the time.)

Unfortunately, this game is with its own flaws of its own. Just like how there's a preview of incoming crops, there should be a preview of incoming enemies, and if you think that's pretty useless, so is the crop meter because it's fairly random. Also, the area lasso that you see when you "box" monsters and crops could use more design and "attitude" to it instead of being a plain ol' boring shading. You probably could have better explained other concepts in the game such as the magnitude of plop spreadage when you create new plops.

While lack of control degrades this game, your talents as a game creator excel very well!

A 10 in Style! Congratz!!

ReduxGames responds:

Thanks alot for the indepth reviews, you see, this is a completely new concept, so its realy hard to pin everything down at once, but comments like yours will realy help me make it better next time around, as in a few days :) i want to take a vacation and then back to implimenting the constructive comments, and to those who left things like #$#& u, on the board... you know same goes for you.

Bleh

I think this game can only go so far and then the rest is all up to Lady Luck. No matter how good you are at games, there are times when there's a wall of huge asteroids that block your way and the only way through is to fly through them, which is usually fatal.

*leaves in a huff*

DifferentName responds:

Sorry... I think if you only lose when it gets truly impossible, that means you win. :-/

Too many glitches!

While it's fun to tell your guys to do sadistic things, there's far too many glitches/exploits/technicalities in the game.

-Some people will randomly sink into the earth and go back and forth like they're spazzing out or something (then eventually die.)
-At higher speed settings, it's possible for people to climb cliffs they otherwise couldn't climb.
-There doesn't seem to be a "stop" function, even if an action would normally provoke them to stop (such as falling a significant distance when digging earth). An improvised method was to demote the freak.
-If you killed off someone and they leave behind a corpse next to where Senines would be, you could opt to retry, then select the panning tool and cause an "earthquake". The corpse from earlier will pick up the Senines for you!
-Time runs independently from the game until you either fail or finish.
-The speed of the people doing tasks isn't affected by the adjustable speed, while regular walking is affected.
-The physics engine needs tweaking in general, since by shaking the screen, I've managed to get someone inside the cavern in the first level (I've failed much more often than I succeeded though =/.)

While the game is looking good so far, I refuse to play it all the way through due to so many gameplay issues.

BoMToons responds:

Hey, that was a really good review. I can tell you spent some serious time putting this thing through the ringer. Most of the stuff you've mentioned has been fixed in the version awaiting NG staff review. Check it out on my site (see my profile) to see the improved version right away. The new version lets you pan using the arrow keys, has shortcuts built into the 1,2, and 3 keys for quick skill assigning, stops the main timer when it should, lets you press "p" to pause and check out a level at your leisure, lets you press 0 and then click a troop to return him to normal walking, and cleans up a lot of the panning issues that plagued my earlier version. The corpses collecting senines was a bug I deliberately left in because I think it's kinda cool.

Please check it out on my site and email me your thoughts: info @ bomtoons .com

Various things everywhere!

Quite vaguely like ZAngband, it's somewhat random (very much so with the starting time), there's several alternatives, pit-falls, and just a loooong way to go where only the most dedicated (okay, maybe mildly dedicated, if you're smart) succeed.

I'm a little on the negative side with the company workers being anime characters from tv shows and stuff (assumed, since I know the cat-eared one in red is), it just doesn't seem right to me. Also, a complete comprehensive guide on how the game works would be nice to consider, since I had to fib on the first few days trying to find out what everything did. And last, there's the serious defect of repetitiveness near the middle and end.

The rpg elements are good, graphics are acceptable, and some of the concepts of the game are a bit on the rarely touched side of things, most notably the office "gauntlet" on which this flash is based entirely on (50 days from a nobody to a CEO, that's fast!)

Overall, it's not a legend nor is it with any particularly new feature with mentioning (about that office thing, "Dilbert" already takes the cake), but I give you a nice pat on the back for doing a job well done!

Shaihulud responds:

Fair words indeed, and nothing can hold a flame to Dilbert, but thanks for the pat on the back!

Wheee*l4g*eeee!!!!

For certain enemies, after I blow them up, the game freezes for a split second. This caused me great headaches in Sa Mantra where my ship would just drive itself into the walls (yes I tried low quality but it's just as bad) and sometimes when there were masses of bullets flying everywhere. Maybe you should work on bandwith conservation.

I applaud your attempt at making a game styled by Tyrian, but I suppose the file size limit for newgrounds just didn't work for you. At least you got the shop part down quite nicely. I don't remember the storyline however, all I remember was that the final level was a bunch of flying fruit (?)

Something that seriously bothered me was the name of the 2nd planet. Is it Liberty or Dune or both?

sspecter responds:

I adressed it in the new ver 1.2. Check it out after some days.

OMG GLITCHES!!

The potion glitch like everyone else mentioned, the eXtreme out-of-synch sounds, and self-duplicating broken scuba gear!

Um, other than that, penetrating the antagonist's castle was a blast =D

Phantasmagor responds:

Casper Here:
Ok man 1st things 1st, adding ingrediants to the potion was never a glitch, weve tested it and it works fine people just dont know how to do it properly!
You have to add things in the correct order and add them to the display picture of the potion not the smaller one where you pick up and place things, the same goes for getting the worm out of the apple!
2nd, sounds are out of sinc coz u most likely kept the game on a quality setting your computer couldnt handle so it ran slow.
3rd, the scuba gear has been fixed long ago but coz the NG staff is away the update hasnt come up.

Thanks for the review!

Hard?

Big complaint, I know, but it's around my level of gaming =D

Going beyond lvl 6 gets crazy, especially when the white dude gets really big and his bullets can potentially kill you. Not much to say except I don't understand how the laser powerups work. There's the Super Charge, but the laser powerups are just random.

GameBalance responds:

Ok. Thanks!

OMG A KEEPER!

those other tutorials should stay blammed forever! This one pwnz!

Now enough of that, the only thing that you didn't take much thought into was explaining the masking part. I don't have the actual flash program, so I guess I'm missing something, although you should have done a better job of explaining it. Also, the cinematic slides in your last tutorial needs working on. Last but not least, your flash is a little on the heavy side in the lag factor compared to the overall average lag of the other flash movies, of which I should say runs pretty smoothly on my crappy computer.

BTW, I found all three major easter eggs! Mwahahaha! One's a sound test (tell nobody!) another gives the history of the games which you borrowed music from (which also contains a message pointing to the sound test) and the last one has the statistics of each of your animations. By "easy to find", I think you actually meant using the cheapo button though. Ever thought about proofing against that? (it's possible, but then one of the easter eggs would be disastrously hard to find)

Helbereth responds:

It does tend to be graphic intensive, I realize. I reccomended medium or low quality settings for some sections. I have ways to help the lag, but it doesn't work on a paused frame (and this being a tutorial, it's loaded with them).

The masking section is really explaining a simple thing. It's a cookie cutter effect - it just requires a lot of forethought.

I chose not to have the buttons be completely hidden because - honestly - the easter eggs are informative as much as they're fun. I didn't want them to be impossible to find. I'm not sure which one you think would have been impossible to locate otherwise (I have some idea) but I chose to offer little hints here and there. Heck there's a message onscreen in the credits that says when there's a button there...

I actually used the one in the credits so that people would watch them (sneaky).

The cinematic slides were done this-afternoon. I literally only spent 20 mins making all three. I've done much better slide effects... I just wanted to demonstrate them.

Eh? What you want?
